goodKenya is likely one of the favorite origin countries for the GLC staff, and this Kainamui AB is no exception. The coffee boasts an incredible juiciness with notes of lemon jam and passion fruit, the pleasant acidity is balanced by a syrupy sweetness.
Kainamui AB comes from the Kirinyaga region, where the Kainamui washing station is located in central Kenya, at the foothills of Mount Kenya. The washing station is operated by approximately 1,800 smallholder farmers who belong to the New Ngariama Farmers Cooperative Society, of which about 600 are women. This same community also runs one of Kenya's most legendary washing stations: Kamwangi. Thus, there is no doubt about the greatness of the coffee.
Behind this coffee are 1,800 smallholder farmers, each owning about 200 coffee trees. They usually also cultivate other crops on their farms, such as macadamia, eucalyptus, tea, maize, and bananas. The area's nutrient-rich, red volcanic soil is ideal for growing SL28 and SL34 varieties. After the farmers bring their ripe red cherries to the washing station, they are hand-sorted into different quality grades, then pulped and dry fermented for 16-20 hours. Following fermentation, the coffee is washed with clean water and sorted by weight, after which it sits in tanks underwater for 24 hours. Finally, the coffee is dried on raised beds for 7-15 days.
